>>> Majestic Arenal Volcano in smoke action....
The Arenal Volcano is the only volcano in Costa Rica constantly active since it woke up after 400 years with the big 1968 eruption.  The volcano today produces ash and smoke columns, small explosions & glowing red lava.  On a clear day, smoke from Volcano can easily be seen, and a clear night shows the true beauty of this majestic Volcano...

Arenal Volcano, along with the beautiful beaches and rainforests, is one of the landmarks of destination Costa Rica, and the Arenal area compliments a great travel experience.

Arenal area is a sizeable area, and this area offers some very nice and some more humble hotel properties for every taste and budget.

There are many activities... From hiking, to canoeing, to horseback-riding, to merely relaxing in the Hot Springs, which make Arenal area not only a beautiful sight to see but to get involved with many enjoyable activities.

Remember, a trip to Costa Rica is not complete without a visit to Arenal...

Insiders Report to Arenal Area by Sunny Land Tours:

The roads leading to Arenal are windy but afford spectacular views.  If you are prone to motion sickness, you might consider carrying Dramamine with you.

The town of Fortuna is a charming village of commercial importance and is where you will get your first glimpse of the volcano.  Here local shops and rustic restaurants fill the town (you find everything from pizza to fried yucca)

A favorite stop along the way to Arenal is the roadside “Pulperias”.  Look for signs saying “Queso Palmito” which is sold at these little establishments.  This is a fresh cheese braided into a ball, some have a creamy consistency much like fresh mozzarella and other varieties have a saltier taste and firmer texture.

Getting there: 2.5 hour drive from San Jose / 5 hour drive from Liberia, Guanacaste.  Local flights to El Tanque Airstrip(located just 20 min. away from most Arenal-Fortuna area hotels) are available from San Jose and Liberia.

The weather in the area is generally hot and humid and you can expect rain showers.  A sweater at night is important as well as a flashlight, good insect repellant and sturdy closed shoes.

Restaurant Highlights: La Vaca Muca is a typical restaurant well known for its homemade pickled vegetables.
